Master ECHO beyond basics with this 2 day workshop. RCE accreditation workshop

Echocardiography (ECHO) is a vital tool in critical care medicine for the rapid assessment of patients presenting with shock, hypotension, syncope, chest pain, shortness of breath, and peri-operative cardiac dysfunction. It is also essential for evaluating cardiac function, volume status, and guiding fluid management in critically ill patients.

Despite its importance, many critical care physicians lack formal training and confidence in performing and interpreting bedside ECHO. Skills in image acquisition, quantitative measurements, assessment of ventricular function, and evaluation of valvular pathology are often inconsistent due to limited access to structured education and supervised practice.

This course addresses this gap through a structured learning pathway that includes:

Online pre-learning to establish core theoretical knowledge.
Hands-on practical training focused on image acquisition, measurements, ventricular function, valvular assessment, and fluid evaluation.
Small-group case-based discussions to consolidate interpretation skills and clinical application.
By improving echocardiographic competence, this course aims to enhance clinical decision-making and patient outcomes in the critical care setting.

Event date: 10 -11 August 2027

Event location: Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Sydney

Who will be teaching: Emergency Physicians and Sonographers

Who should attend

  • Emergency physicians
  • Intensivists
  • Anaesthetists
  • GPs in rural practice/CMOs
  • Senior critical registrars (emergency/anaesthetics/intensive care)

The ECHO masterclass workshop is designed to go beyond the basics of 2D Echo. Teaching is performed by experienced emergency physicians and experienced sonographers working in the critical care area. We have had 10 years experience in the field of teaching Echo. The course includes one day of online preparation. The groups are small to maximise scanning time. We have live models and a 3D simulator which helps understand how the heart works to improve scanning technique.

The course is accredited by ASUM,  ACCRM, and EACCME .

What will be covered

  • Assessment of LV function
  • Assessment of RV function
  • Acute vs Chronic Pulmonary Hypertension
  • The Aorta – measurement and pathology
  • Basic assessment of valvular disorders MR, MS, AS AR
  • Understanding M mode and Spectral Doppler
  • Clinical cases to put everything together
  • LOTS OF SCANNING

The timetable will be confirmed closer in the next few months

Cost: $2000
